About this role
Alfred A. Knopf is seeking an Associate Publicist to work on a wide variety of fiction, poetry, and nonfiction titles, with a particular focus on the poetry list. This role operates in a hybrid model, requiring at least two days per week in the New York City office. The company is a storied leader in publishing, home to Nobel Laureates and prize-winning authors.
The Associate Publicist will execute media campaigns across national, regional, and niche outlets, securing coverage in radio, TV, print, online, newsletters, and podcasts. They will independently plan author tours and accompany authors to local NYC interviews and events. They also develop and maintain relationships with producers, editors, book reviewers, and booksellers.
The role collaborates closely with editorial, marketing, and sales teams to execute cohesive campaigns. The Associate Publicist reads manuscripts ahead of publication and contributes to publicity plans, identifying new media opportunities to build on existing contacts.
This position offers the chance to work with iconic authors and a prestigious list, building expertise in literary publicity. The hybrid arrangement allows for flexibility while maintaining in-office collaboration.
Requirements
- Minimum of 2 years of publicity experience in a publishing environment.
- Ability to work independently as well as in a collaborative team setting.
- Ability to meet deadlines, multitask, and prioritize.
- Ability to independently manage campaign budgets.
- Strong attention to detail and organization skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Must be a creative and strategic thinker.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).
Responsibilities
- Execute media campaigns for paperback and hardcover titles across genres, securing national, regional, and niche media coverage.
- Independently plan and execute author tours, including managing author travel and detailed schedules.
- Accompany authors to local NYC-based interviews and bookselling events.
- Develop and maintain strong working relationships with producers, editors, book reviewers, and booksellers.
- Communicate and build partnerships with agents, managing high-touch author care.
- Create persuasive press materials, including press releases, pitch letters, author Q&As, and story ideas.
- Read manuscripts ahead of publication and contribute to publicity plans.
