About this role

Sutherland seeks a Senior Virtualization Engineer with deep hands-on expertise in Proxmox VE and Nutanix to lead platform assessment and migration of VMware workloads. The role centers on owning technical assessment, migration planning, and Day-2 operational stabilization for enterprise infrastructure.

Daily work includes building lab and PoC environments, defining target architectures, and executing workload migrations with VM conversion and post-migration verification. You will troubleshoot across hypervisor, storage, network, and guest OS layers while coordinating change approvals.

You will collaborate with a cross-functional global team of infrastructure, network, security, and application owners. The position supports engineering activities with occasional travel up to 5 percent to deliver platform solutions for iconic brands worldwide.

Success in this role comes from establishing operational runbooks, automating provisioning with Ansible, and ensuring high availability through cluster HA and storage redundancy. Documentation and knowledge transfer to internal teams complete the engagement.

Requirements

Proven hands-on administration of Proxmox VE in production including clustering, HA, KVM/QEMU, LXC, Ceph/ZFS storage, and networking.
Deep expertise in Nutanix AOS/AHV and strong VMware knowledge for platform migrations.
Experience defining success criteria, test plans, and validation steps across compute, storage, and network.
Ability to produce documentation, admin guides, SOPs, and architecture diagrams for knowledge transfer.
Skill in integrating with directory services, DNS/DHCP, NTP, and PKI while aligning security hardening.

Responsibilities

Lead technical assessment of current VMware estate and define target architecture for Proxmox and/or Nutanix.
Build and configure lab/PoC environments and document findings with risks and trade-offs.
Design migration waves, cutover approaches, and rollback plans while coordinating maintenance windows.
Execute workload migrations from VMware to Nutanix AHV and/or Proxmox with post-migration verification.
Troubleshoot migration issues across hypervisor, storage, network, and guest OS layers.
Establish operational runbooks for patch processes, backups, DR tests, and capacity management.
Ensure high availability configuration and perform failover and recovery drills.
Automate provisioning and configuration using Ansible/IaC and integrate with enterprise services.
