Strengthening and empowering all of the communities we serve. The Oregonian / OregonLive seeks a dynamic and enterprising journalist to cover Portland's thriving women's sports scene, including the NWSL Thorns and upstart WNBA Fire. This role explores the cultural impact of women’s athletics from youth to professional levels.
Deliver a compelling mix of sports and business stories for passionate and casual fans alike. Bring creativity, curiosity, and a commitment to equity in sports coverage. Report and write with proven journalistic ability under deadline pressure.
Work remotely while using social media to find stories and promote content. Gain experience in search engine optimization to enhance reach. Prioritize tasks independently and maintain a sound understanding of news writing, journalistic ethics, and story structure.
Cover events requiring reliable transportation, weekends, holidays, and occasional irregular hours. Contribute to a team dedicated to dynamic sports journalism. Thrive in an environment blending cultural insights with professional athletics coverage.
Requirements
- Degree in journalism or communications or equivalent education and work experience with proven ability in journalism reporting and writing
- Minimum of two years in journalism with proven ability in reporting and writing
- Experience in search engine optimization preferred
- Ability to work independently under deadline pressure and prioritize tasks appropriately
- Sound understanding of news writing, journalistic ethics and story structure
- Experience using social media to find stories and promote content
- Ability to work remotely
- Availability to work weekends, some holidays and occasional irregular hours to meet sporting events and schedules

Benefits
- Base salary range of $55,000 - $65,000 per year
